The following are some of Rome's most famous
and most spectacular attractions:
ST. PETER'S BASILICA:
situated in the Vatican City, presides over Saint Peter's Square. It is
the biggest church in the world, crowned by Michelangelo's imposing dome;
COLOSSEUM: was built in 72AD. Its real name is Flavian Anphitheatre. Nothing
compares to its magnificently complex architecture;
CASTEL SANT'ANGELO:
is found near Vittoro Emanuele II Bridge along the river Tevere. The castle
was built upon instruction of the emperor Adriano as his mausoleum in 130
AD;
FOUNTAIN OF TREVI: built by the architect Salvi in 1735 in the time of Clemento XII, is one
of the most famous and most spectacular fountains of Rome;
PANTHEON:
is one of the world's best- kept monuments. It is found in Piazza della
Rotonda near Minerva and was built upon instruction of Console Agrippa in 27
AC;
PIAZZA DI SPAGNA:
is characterized by the grand flight of stairs of Trinità dei Monti. Some of
Rome's most well-known and most elegant roads begin here;
PIAZZA NAVONA:
is one of the most beautiful and most famous piazzas where it is possible to
admire masterpieces by the famous masters of baroque art such as Borromini,
Bernini della Porta;
PIAZZA DEL POPOLO:
was conceived at the beginning of the 9th century by Valadier and is still
today considered one of the best urbanistic designs of the city;
CAMPIDOGLIO I:
was for many years the citizen's political power center. On the grand flight
of stairs of the Cordonata , which reaches the lovely piazza designed by
Michelangelo, stand the Palazzo Senatorio, the Palazzo Nuovo and the Palazzo
dei Conservatori. These last two mentioned hold the museum halls of the
Musei Capitolini;
MUSEI CAPITOLINI:
were built in 1471 thanks to the donation made by Pope Sisto IV to the
Roman people.
