I stayed at this hotel two years ago, a couple of months after it opened up, and was pleased upon my return this summer to find the Manzoni metro stop right across the street had opened after renovations, which makes the Hotel Milton much more convenient for sightseers who wish to zip over to the Vatican Museums (Ottaviano Stop) or the Spanish Steps (Spagna). (If you arrive at Stazione Termini, don't have much luggage and can handle a short flight of steps, you can save yourself 9 euros by taking the 1 euro Metro two stops instead of spending 10 euros on a very short cab ride.) I stayed twice (in two different single rooms) in two weeks and had excellent experiences both times--if you book a single, be sure to ask for a bathtub (if you want one) as some of the singles have showers only. (After a day pounding the pavement in Rome, this sightseer needs a long soak in a hot tub to recover!)
The rooms are on the small side (remember, the building is a renovated convent!) but well appointed with nice furnishings. While I had to leave too early to eat breakfast on my second stay, the breakfasts during my first stay were ample and wonderful--the only improvement I can think of would have been "real" cappucino from a professional espresso machine instead of self-made cappucino from a self-service machine. But if you are that picky about coffee (and personally, I'm so particular), there's a nice little bar right across the street where you can have your morning coffee made by a Roman barista.
The bar at the hotel now serves a light dinner menu, with quick (and tasty) dishes like spaghetti carbonara, which is quite convenient if you are trying to get to a concert and don't want to spend 2 hours eating dinner at a trattoria before or after. (And, if you are staying here in the summer, you should definitely check out the free concert series at San Giovanni Laterano--they are held in the courtyard of the gorgeous Lateran palace under the stars at 9 p.m. on some summer weekend evenings--I did and had a wonderful night out at no cost!)
The excellent air conditioning system at the Hotel Mildon is a blessing in the hot Roman summers, and the hotel is only a 15 minute stroll from the Colosseum and 5 minutes from San Giovanni Laterano, and about 10 from Santa Maria Maggiore. (If you are feeling lazy, you can also take the Metro to the Colosseum, but you need go back to Termini and switch to the other Metro line in that case.) Obviously, if you want to be a hop, skip, and a jump from Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, the Hotel Milton isn't the right place for you, but if you are only staying in Rome for a few days and need a hotel convenient to Termini but don't want to stay in the seedy neighborhood right next to the station, this hotel's a wonderful pick--easily reachable by public transport, as long as you don't have too much luggage to deal with!
